In the summer of 2017, we sold our home in Tulsa, OK and were officially on the “hunt” for another remodel. This house on Urbana Ave is a complete jewel in the rough and since the owners have been there 43 years its in desperate need of updates, thankfully the bones are amazing. It’s a post & beam, mid century modern design- but built in the 1970’s! Here are some fun before photos for you to catch the vision:
We fell in love with the modern lines, the natural light and the original wood ceiling :
(the photo above is after the owners moved out and before demo!)
The entryway, staircase and hallway have this huge brown hex tile that is too amazing to take out- who would have thought hex would be all the rage right now?
The kitchen has beautiful beautiful windows that let in west facing light and the beams and slanted ceiling continues in this space as well. We have a vision for this kitchen that will be so light and bright (think white!) and we are excited to try some new trends like open shelving and to have wood floors for the first time in our kitchen.
The kids bathroom (or hallway bath) has a few challenges, the first being that it has the lowest ceiling in the house and no natural light 🙁 It’s also very small and leaves little room for storage pieces- the good side is that the flooring can be fun and a little more expensive because its such a small space. A few friends recommended leaving the black tile and toilet but I don’t think we can take that risk, but we do love a B&W bathroom palette!
The master bedroom is a little retreat at the back of the house with a beautiful view of the backyard and a sliding door onto the wrap around deck (it’s as heavenly as it sounds!) We have the same challenges with this space as we do the rest of the house- old carpet, brown trim, old heavy curtains and dark brown beams. We will put in wood floors, paint the beams, trim and walls white and research the best window coverings that allow privacy when wanted (hello master bedroom!) but also letting in all the natural light and the gorgeous view!
The master bathroom is connecting to the bedroom and you actually walk past it on your way to the bedroom! It has huge windows that are set up 8 feet above the vanity lighting so there is always great indirect lighting coming in- swoon! We are still leaning toward a neutral bathroom color scheme of white and natural wood, I’ll keep you posted!
The 2 kids bedrooms have amazing natural lighting (are you seeing a theme?) good closet space and those tall ceilings which make the rooms feel so much bigger.
As I look at these bedroom photos one word comes back to my mind over and over: BROWN! There is so much brown everywhere and even though its trendy my heart says to go white everywhere to lighten and brighten all the rooms. Now for the backyard and back deck:
Are you totally in LOVE with this remodel? Did you catch the vision? I hope so, we feel so blessed to have found this beauty and can’t wait to make it look like new again! From 1970’s brown to 2018 white & bright, be on the lookout for photos of the process! We are hoping to be in by the end of January!
